A woman aged in her fifties who is a successful architect meets a man of her age during intermission at a production of the opera Thaïs, by Massenet. The man is a lapsed monk of the Benedictine order who has education in philosophy and theology. Stimulating conversations follow, more music, and eventually romance. She is suffering from heart disease. They go to church and discover a world that still thrives amid postmodern cultural decay.
